Chapter Sixteen

Since Greer had texted saying Whit was once again too tired to come in to the shop today, Delaney let herself in with the front door key he’d given her a few days ago. The weight of it in her hand was heavy, unfamiliar. Just like the responsibility he was trying to put on her.

But still, the scent of leather and conditioner hanging in the air hit her like the smell of chocolate chip cookies would affect an eight-year-old. Wrapped her in all things good. Anticipation. Belonging. Love.

What was happening to her? She was letting Whit’s influence, Cal’s attraction, and other people’s needs get to her. Get in her brain and swirl around in there until she wasn’t sure which direction she’d been heading originally.

It was probably best the kiss she and Cal had shared had been interrupted. Without a doubt, she still wanted him, but she’d been crazy to think getting naked with him wouldn’t further muddle up this entire situation.

It had been selfish of her to suggest they become booty call buddies. Cal wasn’t that kind of man, and realistically, she wasn’t that kind of woman. Yes, their chemistry now was even more powerful than the one they’d shared years ago. But what if one of them mixed up physical chemistry with emotional chemistry?

At first she’d been worried about Cal, but with every day she spent in Prophecy, she could feel herself gravitating closer to him. And it was hard to fight a danger that felt so damn good.

But after his aunt’s show of protest and her snide remarks the other night, Delaney was still on edge. Did the woman know something, or was she just a determined old busybody?

Delaney flipped on the shop’s lights. It had changed so little in the years she’d been gone. Sure, it could use some updating. Some photos of Whit’s custom work. Brighter colors. A nice window display.

Ideas chased one another through her brain.

And what if they offered more than boots and belts? People loved leather. What about purses and jewelry? Even Christmas stockings and ornaments. Wouldn’t miniature boots make knock-out decorations for a tree?

Stop. Stop. Stop.

This is not your rodeo.

Her rodeo was somewhere in…in… Where was her tour group now? What day was it? She didn’t even know, and that smacked her solidly in the chest. Her travel dreams were slowly drifting away as if she’d imagined them, much like the time her mom had been excited about taking a community college course and then been forced to drop out when they moved mid-semester.

Even if Delaney had no intention of drawing a single prophecy boot, leaving Whit hanging without a custom bootmaker didn’t sit right with her, and so far she hadn’t heard a damn thing about the great bootmaker search from any of the Maddox family. It was time for her to check into the situation herself.

She flipped on her iPad and surfed off Ruidosa’s wireless since Whit hadn’t yet embraced the Internet age. She quickly found sites for two custom bootmakers in Texas and one in Oklahoma.
